Obituary for Howard M Fields

Howard M Fields, 83, of Mount Pleasant , South Carolina died, Wednesday, May 30, 2018 after willfully battling declining health for several years. Dad was born on July 8, 1934 in Middelsboro, Kentucky to Howard and Grace Fields, who preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his sister Dorothy, his brother Robert, and an infant daughter. He graduated from Central High School in Fountain City, Tennessee in 1952 and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee in 1957 where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He was a member of the Army Reserves from 1956 - 1962. After college, Dad began his career in manufacturing management with United States Gypsum. He continued working for USG and then Domtar, Inc. for over 37 years, retiring in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina in 1996. Dad was very active in the church, serving at times as an Elder, a Trustee, and choir member in the congregations he and the family joined as we moved during the course of his career. He has been a longtime member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church on Sullivan’s Island. Dad loved golf, the UT Volunteers, Barbershop Quartet, beach reunions, and Saturday afternoon cookouts. Among Dad’s proudest accomplishments in retirement was as a volunteer reading tutor for 3rd graders at Charles Pinckney Elementary School. But, above all, his greatest enjoyment came from time spent with his family. He will be dearly missed by us all.
Dad is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Ann Fields, a brother, James Dizney Fields, daughter Marcella Lynn Fields, daughter Christy Fields Weisiger and her husband Gregory, daughter Cynthia Lee Larkin and her husband Michael, and son Gregory Howard Fields. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Erin Weisiger Willis and her husband Tanner, Annie Leigh Larkin, and Rachel Grace Larkin, one grandson, Michael Howard Weisiger, one great-granddaughter Charlotte Katherine Willis and one great-grandson, Baby Boy Willis, expected in June, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family, including his much-loved other “daughter” Shevawn Stewart and her family.
We would like to thank the Sunrise Presbyterian Church and Dunes West communities for the many ways they helped Dad and all of us in the past few years. The Celebration of Life Services will be held on June 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 3222 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, 29482. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the MS Society. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted to Arrangements entrusted to Palmetto Cremation Society, 11 Cunnington Avenue Charleston, South Carolina, 29405, 843-722-2555.
